Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty): Types, Results, Recovery and Cost
Tummy tucks, or abdominoplasty, remove loose skin and fat from the lower abdomen and usually tighten separated stomach muscles. A full tummy tuck uses a hip-to-hip incision and moves the belly button; a mini version treats only below the navel. Expect two to six weeks off work and long-lasting results at a stable weight.
| At a glance | Typical guide |
|---|---|
| Operating time | 2 to 5 hours, general anaesthesia |
| Hospital stay | Day case to a few nights |
| Time off work | About 2 to 6 weeks |
| Sport | At least 6 to 8 weeks |
| US surgeon fee | $8,000 to $13,500 (2024 range) |
| UK total price | About £5,000 to £10,000 |
US figures are from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS, US) and exclude anaesthesia and facility fees; UK figures are from the NHS.
What is a tummy tuck?
Abdominoplasty removes the skin and fat that diet and exercise can’t, and repairs a weakened abdominal wall when needed.
Loose skin and weakened connective tissue can follow large weight changes, pregnancy, a C-section or aging, according to Mayo Clinic. The surgeon removes most of the skin and fat between the belly button and pubic hair, tightens the abdominal fascia with permanent stitches, and brings the belly button out through a new opening. Liposuction is often added. Stretch marks below the navel are usually removed with the skin, and an old C-section scar can be included in the new one.
ASPS counted about 171,064 tummy tucks in the US in 2024. Surgery may be advised against if you plan to lose a lot of weight or have more children, smoke, have a BMI of 30 or more, or have heart disease or diabetes, per the same Mayo Clinic page. In my practice, I ask patients to hold a stable weight for at least six months first, because later weight loss can loosen the skin again.
Types: mini, full and extended
The type depends on where loose skin sits: below the navel only, across the whole front, or around the flanks too.
| Type | Treats | Belly button | Return to work |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mini (partial) | Skin below the navel | Not moved | About 1 to 2 weeks |
| Full (standard) | Skin above and below the navel, muscle repair | Repositioned | Non-strenuous work at about 2 weeks |
| Extended | Front plus flanks, often with liposuction | Repositioned | About 4 to 6 weeks |
A 2024 ASPS blog describes these types: a mini tummy tuck needs about five to six weeks before vigorous activity, and an extended tuck about 12 weeks before strenuous activity. The NHS describes the partial and full versions. People with fat but firm skin may need only lipo 360.
Before and after
The abdomen looks flatter straight away, but swelling takes about three months to settle and the scar up to 18 months to fade.
An ASPS blog says swelling can take up to three months to resolve. The scar may take up to a year to fade, according to Mayo Clinic, and the NHS says raised, red scars fade over 12 to 18 months. Results are usually long-lasting at a stable weight, though a new pregnancy can stretch the abdomen again. Results by type, including extended tummy tucks with flank liposuction, are in our tummy tuck before and after guide.
Recovery
Plan for help at home for the first week or two, a binder for six to eight weeks and no heavy lifting for six weeks.
- Days 1 to 3: walk from the first day to lower clot risk; rest with your knees bent and upper body raised.
- Week 1 to 2: drains, if used, usually come out within days; driving and cooking resume at one to two weeks.
- Weeks 2 to 6: return to desk work; avoid lifting, straining and quick bending.
- Weeks 6 to 8: binder off; gradual return to sport.
These binder and lifting timings come from Mayo Clinic, and an ASPS blog says most people feel normal at about eight weeks. Our tummy tuck recovery guide compares drainless and traditional techniques.
Diastasis repair
Diastasis recti is a gap between the two vertical stomach muscles, common after pregnancy, that a full tummy tuck can close.
Separated muscles cause a bulge that may contribute to low back pain, Mayo Clinic explains, and tightening the fascia with lasting stitches brings them together. A 2026 ASPS article notes pregnancy changes such as diastasis can be permanent despite exercise. Muscle repair adds to recovery: one surgeon writing for HCPLive says the muscles are about 90% healed at six to eight weeks, with crunches delayed for up to six months. Post-pregnancy plans often combine a tummy tuck with breast surgery in a mommy makeover.
Frequently Asked Questions
FAQ
Answers on tummy tuck scars, pregnancy afterwards, insurance cover, weight limits and how a tummy tuck compares with liposuction.
Where is the tummy tuck scar?
Low across the abdomen, usually along the swimsuit line from hip to hip, plus a small scar around the belly button in a full tuck. Fading takes up to a year by Mayo Clinic’s estimate, or 12 to 18 months according to the NHS.
Can I get pregnant after a tummy tuck?
Yes, but pregnancy can stretch the skin and separate the muscles again. Because Mayo Clinic advises against surgery if you’re planning a future pregnancy, most surgeons suggest waiting until you’ve finished having children.
Does insurance cover a tummy tuck?
Usually not for cosmetic reasons. The NHS says tummy tucks aren’t normally available on the NHS. Removing an overhanging skin apron for medical reasons, such as recurrent rashes, is sometimes covered under separate rules.
Is there a weight limit for a tummy tuck?
Many surgeons set one. Mayo Clinic lists a BMI of 30 or higher among reasons surgery may be advised against, and recommends a stable weight for about 6 to 12 months. Very overweight patients may be asked to lose weight first.
Tummy tuck or liposuction: which do I need?
Liposuction removes fat when skin is firm. A tummy tuck removes loose skin and can repair separated muscles. If skin hangs or you have a post-pregnancy bulge, liposuction alone won’t fix it; many tummy tucks include liposuction.
