Tummy Tuck Before and After Pictures: Full, Extended and Timeline

Tummy tucks before and after usually show a flatter, firmer abdomen, a tighter waist and a low scar from hip to hip. Loose skin and most stretch marks below the navel are gone, and repaired muscles reduce a post-pregnancy bulge. Swelling settles over about three months, and the scar fades over 12 to 18 months.

This guide is part of our tummy tuck overview, which explains types, recovery and cost.

Full tummy tuck

Full tummy tucks before and after change the whole front of the abdomen, above and below the navel, and often the muscle wall.

What changes Typical result
Loose skin Removed between navel and pubic area
Stretch marks Those below the navel go with the skin
Muscle bulge Flatter after diastasis repair
Belly button New opening, natural position
Scar Low, hip to hip, plus around the navel

Mayo Clinic describes removing most of the skin and fat between the belly button and pubic hair, tightening the fascia to bring separated muscles together, and often adding liposuction. A prior C-section scar can be included. In my practice, I plan the scar with the patient’s own underwear in place, so it sits low enough to stay covered.

Extended with flank lipo

An extended tummy tuck with flank lipo before and after shows change around the sides as well as the front, at the cost of a longer scar.

A 2024 American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS, US) blog describes the extended tuck as treating the flanks, with the belly button repositioned and liposuction used to contour the sides. It suits people with loose skin that wraps toward the back, often after major weight loss. The ASPS blog says return to work takes about four to six weeks and strenuous activity about 12 weeks. When loose skin extends right around the back, a lower body lift may suit better; see body contouring after weight loss.

Results timeline

The flatter shape shows at once, but the final look takes months as swelling fades and the scar matures.

Time What you’ll usually see
Week 1 Flatter but swollen; you stand slightly bent
6 weeks Upright posture; most swelling gone; binder off
3 months Swelling largely settled; shape close to final
12 to 18 months Scar paler and flatter

The NHS says the full result shows at about six weeks and scars fade over 12 to 18 months. An ASPS blog says swelling can take up to three months to resolve, and Mayo Clinic says the binder is worn for about six to eight weeks. Fluid swelling above the scar and numbness can last months, according to the NHS.

Judging pictures

Tummy tucks before and after pictures are only fair comparisons when they’re dated, use the same pose and show the scar.

  • Same pose and light: standing straight, arms at the sides, no flexing.
  • Time stated: at least three months after surgery.
  • Scar visible: underwear lowered so the scar and navel can be judged.
  • Similar body type: ask for patients with your skin quality and weight history.

We don’t show a gallery here because patient photos need individual consent, and computer-made images would mislead.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ

Answers on flank liposuction, stretch marks, the belly button, scar fading and whether results last after a tummy tuck.

What does an extended tummy tuck with flank lipo change?

It treats loose skin across the front and around the sides, while liposuction slims the flanks. The waist looks narrower from the front and side. The scar runs further toward the back, and recovery is longer than for a full tuck.

Will a tummy tuck remove my stretch marks?

Only those on the skin that is removed, mainly below the navel. Mayo Clinic says stretch marks and excess skin below the belly button can be removed. Marks above the navel usually stay, though they may sit lower.

When will my tummy tuck scar fade?

Slowly. The NHS says raised, red scars fade over 12 to 18 months, and Mayo Clinic says up to a year. Silicone sheets or gel and sun protection are commonly advised. The scar never disappears completely.

Are tummy tuck results permanent?

Usually long-lasting if your weight stays stable, according to Mayo Clinic. Weight gain, aging and a new pregnancy can stretch the skin and muscles again, which is why surgeons suggest waiting until you’ve finished having children.
