Body Contouring: Surgical vs Non-Surgical Procedures Explained
Body contouring is any procedure that reshapes the body by removing fat, excess skin or both, or by tightening tissue. Surgical options such as liposuction, tummy tuck and body lifts give larger, permanent changes with weeks of recovery. Non-surgical treatments such as fat freezing and radiofrequency give modest changes with little downtime. Neither is a weight-loss method.
| Option | US cost guide | Recovery | Results |
|---|---|---|---|
| Liposuction | $4,300 to $7,500 (2024 range) | About 2 weeks off work | Long-lasting if weight is stable |
| Tummy tuck | $8,000 to $13,500 (2024 range) | About 4 to 6 weeks | Long-lasting |
| Lower body lift | $10,000 to $16,500 (2024 range) | Several weeks | Long-lasting |
| Non-invasive fat reduction | Average $1,157 (2023) | Little or none | Gradual, modest |
Costs are physician fees reported by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS, US) and exclude anaesthesia and facility fees.
What is body contouring?
Body contouring and sculpting reshape stubborn areas such as the abdomen, waist, thighs and arms after diet and exercise have done what they can.
Liposuction was the most common cosmetic surgery in the US in 2024, with about 349,728 procedures, and tummy tucks numbered about 171,064, according to ASPS. The NHS says liposuction suits people who aren’t overweight and have firm, elastic skin, and says it doesn’t treat obesity, cellulite or stretch marks. The main body contouring benefits are shape and clothing fit, not health.
Some body contouring facts worth knowing: fat removed by surgery doesn’t return, but remaining fat can grow with weight gain; loose skin needs surgery to remove; and 360 body contouring, treating the abdomen, flanks and back together, gives a more even waist than treating one area. Female body contouring often aims for an hourglass body contouring shape through the waist and hips. Face and body contouring can be planned together, but they’re separate procedures.
In my practice, the body contouring consultation starts with a pinch test: if I can pinch mostly fat, liposuction may suit; if it’s mostly loose skin, it needs excision.
Surgical procedures
Options for body contouring surgery remove fat, skin or both through incisions, and each body contouring procedure targets a different mix of problems.
| Procedure | Treats | Recovery |
|---|---|---|
| Liposuction | Localised fat with good skin | Compression for weeks; gentle exercise at about 3 to 4 weeks |
| Lipo 360 | Fat around the whole waist | Similar to liposuction, more swelling |
| Tummy tuck | Loose abdominal skin, separated muscles | About 4 to 6 weeks off work and exercise |
| Lower body lift | Loose skin of abdomen, buttocks, hips, thighs | Several weeks; often staged |
| Arm and thigh lifts | Hanging skin on arms or inner thighs | Weeks; visible scars |

Non-surgical treatments
A body contouring treatment without surgery can be fat freezing, radiofrequency, focused ultrasound, laser and muscle stimulation, with modest results.
A 2019 review in the Australasian Journal of Dermatology covered five FDA-cleared approaches: cryolipolysis, laser, high-intensity focused electromagnetic field (HIFEM), radiofrequency and high-intensity focused ultrasound. The authors said they don’t match liposuction but may suit people who want to avoid surgery. A 2016 review found typical waist reductions of about 2 to 4 cm and little effect on body weight. UCLA Health notes fat freezing can reduce fat in a treated area by up to 28% at four months. Details are in our non-invasive body contouring guide, and home options are covered in body contouring at home.
Results
Surgical results appear as swelling fades over weeks to months; non-surgical results build gradually over two to four months.
After liposuction, the NHS says bruising and swelling can last up to six months. After a tummy tuck, scars fade over 12 to 18 months. Fat freezing results typically take two months or more. A rare side effect of fat freezing, paradoxical adipose hyperplasia, causes treated fat to grow instead; UCLA Health cites estimates from about 1 in 20,000 to 1 in 2,000. Cost
Surgical body contouring costs several thousand dollars per area; non-surgical sessions cost less each but often need repeating.
Prices depend on how many areas are treated, anaesthesia, facility and country. Most insurance doesn’t cover cosmetic body contouring. Our body contouring cost guide has a full price table and tips for choosing a clinic.
After weight loss
After major weight loss, loose skin usually needs excision surgery, often in stages, once weight has been stable for months.
ASPS lists arm lifts, breast lifts, lower body lifts, thigh lifts and tummy tucks as common procedures after major weight loss, often done in stages. Surgeons quoted by ASPS advise reaching a goal weight and keeping it stable for at least three to six months. Our guide to body contouring after weight loss covers staging and recovery.
Frequently Asked Questions
FAQ
Answers on body contouring treatment types, permanence, weight loss, candidacy and how surgical and non-surgical results compare.
What are the main body contouring treatment types?
Surgical types include liposuction, tummy tuck, lower body lift, and arm and thigh lifts. Non-surgical types include fat freezing, radiofrequency, focused ultrasound, laser and muscle stimulation. Surgery gives larger, permanent changes; non-surgical options give modest changes with little downtime.
Is body contouring permanent?
Removed fat cells and skin don’t come back, but remaining fat can grow if you gain weight, and skin keeps aging. ASPS notes that weight gain reduces satisfaction after liposuction. Stable weight keeps results longest.
Can body contouring help me lose weight?
No. It reshapes areas rather than reducing body weight. The NHS says liposuction isn’t a treatment for obesity, and reviews of non-surgical devices found little or no effect on weight. It suits people near their goal weight.
Who is a good candidate for body contouring?
Healthy adults near a stable goal weight, non-smokers or willing to stop, with realistic expectations. Surgeons quoted by ASPS ask for a stable weight for at least three to six months after major weight loss. Good skin elasticity suits liposuction.
Is surgical or non-surgical body contouring better?
It depends on the goal. Surgery removes more fat and can remove loose skin, with weeks of recovery. Non-surgical devices give smaller changes of a few centimetres without downtime. Loose skin always needs surgery.
