What Is a Mommy Makeover? Procedures, Cost, Recovery and Results

A mommy makeover is a set of cosmetic operations, usually done together, that restores the breasts and abdomen after pregnancy. The most common combination is a tummy tuck with a breast lift or augmentation, often with liposuction of the waist. Surgery takes about three to five hours, and US costs often total $15,000 to $20,000.

Definition

The procedure aims to restore the shape of the body after childbearing, combining several procedures into one plan.

ASPS describes the goal as restoring the shape and appearance of the body after childbearing, most often the breasts, abdomen and waist. It’s typically done in a single stage. ASPS lists good health, a weight at an optimal level, realistic expectations and having finished having children as the main criteria, and an ASPS blog suggests a BMI under 30 and being near pre-pregnancy weight. Surgeons quoted by ASPS in 2026 advise waiting at least six months after delivery, longer if breastfeeding, and ideally nine to twelve months. They also point out that pregnancy changes such as separated abdominal muscles can be permanent despite exercise.

Procedures included

Each plan is personal; a full mommy makeover usually treats the breasts and abdomen, while smaller plans pick one or two areas.

Procedure Treats US surgeon fee (2024)
Tummy tuck Loose skin, separated muscles $8,000 to $13,500
Breast lift Sagging, stretched breasts $6,500 to $11,000
Breast augmentation Lost volume $4,575 to $8,000
Breast reduction Heavy breasts $7,000 to $12,500
Liposuction Waist, flanks, thighs $4,300 to $7,500

A mommy tummy makeover focuses on the abdomen with a tummy tuck. A 360 mommy makeover adds liposuction around the whole waist, the same idea as lipo 360, for mommy makeover body sculpting. ASPS also lists labiaplasty and buttock augmentation, and a 2026 ASPS article notes that some plans add eyelid surgery, injectables or lasers, which is what clinics mean by a mommy makeover face. Non-surgical mommy makeover treatment options are covered in our non-surgical mommy makeover guide.

In my practice, I plan the abdomen first and fit the breast procedure around it, because the tummy tuck sets the length of the operation and the recovery.

Cost

Cost depends on which procedures are combined, plus anaesthesia, facility, implants, garments and medicines.

The typical US total is $15,000 to $20,000, according to an ASPS blog, and many surgeons offer financing. Insurance rarely covers cosmetic surgery. Our mommy makeover cost guide has a full breakdown.

Before and after

The flatter abdomen and lifted breasts show at once, but results keep improving for up to a year as swelling settles.

Swelling lasts a few weeks, normal activities resume at about three months and final results take six months to a year, per an ASPS recovery blog. A new pregnancy often undoes the result. See our mommy makeover before and after guide and, for larger bodies, mommy makeover for plus size.

Recovery

Expect about two weeks off work, help with childcare and no lifting of children or heavy objects for several weeks.

ASPS blogs advise at least 24 hours of supervised recovery, about two weeks off work, and no gym or heavy lifting for four to six weeks. Our mommy makeover recovery timeline covers sleeping position and lifting a toddler, the recovery must-haves checklist helps you prepare, and exercise and diet after a mommy makeover covers the months after.

Abroad

Lower headline prices abroad come with travel-related risks, flight restrictions and limited follow-up care once you’re home.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) lists tummy tucks, breast augmentation and liposuction among the most common medical-tourism procedures, with infection and blood clots among the risks, and advises against flying for 10 days after chest or abdominal surgery. Mommy makeover scar tattoo

A tattoo can disguise a tummy tuck or breast scar once it has fully matured, usually after a year or more.

The NHS says tummy tuck scars fade over 12 to 18 months, so most tattoo artists wait until the scar is pale, flat and no longer tender. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warns that tattoos can cause infection from unsterile equipment or contaminated ink, allergic reactions, granulomas and keloids, which can form after any skin injury. If you’ve ever had a raised or keloid scar, ask your surgeon before a mommy makeover tattoo.

  • When it is safe: after the scar has matured and your surgeon agrees, with a licensed artist experienced in scar work.
  • Ideas: a vine or floral line along the scar, a design that sits below the bikini line, or medical areola tattooing after a breast lift.
  • Mommy makeover tattoo cover up: an existing abdominal tattoo may move lower or be partly removed with the skin, so discuss it before surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ

Answers on timing after pregnancy, future pregnancies, staging, scars and covering a scar with a tattoo.

How long after having a baby can I get a mommy makeover?

Surgeons quoted by ASPS advise at least six months after delivery, longer if breastfeeding, and ideally nine to twelve months. Breasts may take months after weaning to settle. You should also have finished having children.

Can I get pregnant after a mommy makeover?

Yes, but a new pregnancy often undoes much of the result, according to an ASPS blog, by stretching the skin and separating the muscles again. Most surgeons suggest waiting until your family is complete.

Is a mommy makeover done in one operation?

Usually, with surgical time kept to about five hours. An ASPS blog notes that some plans are split into two stages three to six months apart, for safety or a smoother recovery.

Can I tattoo over my mommy makeover scar?

Often, once the scar has matured. The NHS says tummy tuck scars fade over 12 to 18 months. The FDA warns tattoos can cause infection, allergies and keloids, so ask your surgeon first if you scar easily.
