Body Contouring After Weight Loss (incl. 100 lb+ Loss)

Body contouring after weight loss removes loose, hanging skin that diet and exercise can’t tighten. Common procedures are a tummy tuck or lower body lift, breast lift, arm lift and thigh lift, often done in stages. Surgeons usually want your weight stable for at least three to six months and your nutrition, especially protein, in good shape first.

Procedures after massive weight loss

Body contouring after weight loss focuses on skin removal; ASPS lists lower body lifts, tummy tucks, arm, thigh and breast lifts.

ASPS describes each procedure: an arm lift for sagging upper arms, a breast lift for flattened breasts, a lower body lift for the abdomen, buttocks, hips and outer thighs, a medial thigh lift for inner thighs, and a tummy tuck for an apron of skin over the abdomen. All require large incisions. In 2024, US surgeons performed about 10,957 lower body lifts, 23,527 arm lifts and 9,914 thigh lifts.

Liposuction alone rarely helps here, because the problem is mostly skin, not fat. For a waist with remaining fat, see lipo 360; for the abdomen alone, see our tummy tuck overview.

Surgical body contouring after 100 lb weight loss

A surgeon quoted by ASPS in 2026 found that patients who lost more than 100 pounds, whether with GLP-1 medicines or bariatric surgery, had stretched, thin skin with reduced elasticity. Skin quality depended more on how much weight was lost than on how. After gastric bypass, poor absorption of nutrients can slow wound healing, so blood tests and dietitian input matter. In my practice, patients after very large weight loss usually need at least two operations, and I plan the order around what bothers them most.

Staging

Large skin-removal plans are usually split into stages so each operation stays a safe length and recovery stays manageable.

  1. Reach and hold your goal weight: surgeons quoted by ASPS advise at least three to six months of stability. On GLP-1 medicines, one surgeon wants a stable maintenance dose for at least three months; after stopping, she waits four to six months.
  2. Optimise nutrition: one surgeon recommends at least 100 grams of protein a day, adjusted for size.
  3. Pause GLP-1 medicine around surgery: often two to three weeks before, because slowed stomach emptying raises anaesthetic risk.
  4. Start with the main concern: breast surgery and tummy tucks are often combined, while one surgeon avoids pairing thigh lifts with arm lifts, or arm lifts with tummy tucks.

ASPS notes that weight loss may take two years or more, and body contouring results may take as long to complete.

Recovery

Recovery ranges from a couple of weeks to six to eight weeks or more, depending on the procedures and how many are combined.

Plan for help at home and light activity at first. After a tummy tuck, the NHS advises about four to six weeks off work and exercise and a support garment for about six weeks. Arm and thigh lift scars are more visible than tummy tuck or breast lift scars; silicone sheeting and sunscreen help them fade. ASPS also notes surgery should be postponed for an active rash, yeast infection or open sores in skin folds, and that some laxity can return as swelling settles.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ

Answers on timing after weight loss, GLP-1 medicines, how many surgeries you’ll need and whether insurance covers skin removal.

How long after weight loss can I have body contouring?

Once your weight has been stable for at least three to six months, according to surgeons quoted by ASPS. If you’re on a GLP-1 medicine, one surgeon wants a stable dose for at least three months first. Good nutrition matters as much as timing.

How many surgeries are needed after 100 lb weight loss?

Often two or more. Surgery after major weight loss is commonly staged, starting with the area of most concern, such as the abdomen and breasts, then arms or thighs. Your surgeon plans the order around safety and recovery.

Do I need to stop GLP-1 medicine before surgery?

Usually for a short time. ASPS reports that GLP-1 medicines are often paused two to three weeks before surgery because they slow stomach emptying, which raises the risk of inhaling stomach contents under anaesthesia. Follow your surgeon’s and prescriber’s advice.

Does insurance cover skin removal after weight loss?

Cosmetic contouring usually isn’t covered. Removing an overhanging skin apron for medical reasons, such as recurrent rashes, is sometimes covered depending on your insurer’s rules. Ask for written pre-approval before booking.

If you’d like a staged plan after your weight loss, you can book a consultation with Metropole Clinic by ABmedi. For all options, return to the body contouring hub.
