Lipo 360 Recovery Week by Week: Swelling, Faja Stages and Lymphatic Massage

Lipo 360 recovery follows a steady pattern, traditional or VASER. Swelling and soreness peak in the first week, most bruising fades by weeks three to six, and gentle exercise usually starts at three to four weeks. You’ll wear a firm stage 1 garment first, then a softer stage 2. Swelling can take three to six months to settle.

Recovery week by week

Vaser lipo 360 recovery week by week swelling follows the same broad timeline as standard liposuction, with the most change in the first six weeks.

Time What’s normal What to do
Days 1 to 3 Fluid leaking from small incisions, soreness, peak swelling Rest, walk short distances, wear stage 1 garment 24/7
Week 1 Moderate pain, bruising, tightness Take prescribed pain relief; stitches may come out
Week 2 Pain easing; feeling more like yourself Desk work often possible; avoid strenuous activity
Weeks 3 to 4 Visible change; firm or lumpy areas Gentle exercise; switch to stage 2 if advised
Weeks 6 to 8 Most bruising gone; numbness easing Gradually return to full exercise
Months 3 to 6 Remaining swelling settles Judge the final result with your surgeon

An American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS, US) blog says pain is moderate for the first few days and mostly gone by about a month, people usually return to work at about two weeks and light exercise at about four. Stitches come out after about a week, numbness lasts six to eight weeks, strenuous activity is generally avoided for 10 to 12 weeks, and bruising and swelling can last up to six months, according to the NHS.

VASER uses ultrasound to loosen fat before removal; Mayo Clinic says it may help skin shaping. ASPS lists heat injury as a specific risk of ultrasound-assisted liposuction. We didn’t find studies showing a different recovery timeline for VASER, so plan on the same weeks.

Stage 1 vs stage 2 faja

A stage 1 faja is firmer and worn around the clock early on; a stage 2 faja is softer and worn once swelling eases.

Feature Stage 1 Stage 2
When Straight after surgery, about 1 to 2 weeks About weeks 2 to 6
Wear time 24 hours a day Often long hours, not always 24/7
Feel Firmer, often with zips or hooks and an opening for the toilet Softer, closer fit as swelling falls
Purpose Support, control early swelling and bruising Shape as you return to normal activity

In a 2025 ASPS article, surgeons described these stages and said there are no firm guidelines on timing. One surgeon advises round-the-clock wear for at least six weeks, then part-time for several months. Garments should be compressive but never cut off circulation; numbness, tingling or skin colour change in the legs needs prompt attention. In my practice, I check the garment fit at the one-week visit, because a stage 1 garment that was right on day one is often loose once the first swelling falls.

Lymphatic drainage timeline

Lymphatic drainage massage after lipo 360 is widely offered, but the timing comes mainly from surgeon preference rather than strong trials.

  1. First days: follow your surgeon’s plan; many wait until incisions have sealed.
  2. Weeks 1 to 4: gentle sessions are offered by some surgeons to ease swelling; avoid deep pressure over tender, bruised areas.
  3. From about 1 month: in a 2022 trial of 30 women after thigh liposuction, massage started one month after surgery, three times a week for eight weeks, alongside bandaging.
  4. After 2 to 3 months: continue only if swelling or firmness persists and your surgeon agrees.

That trial compared two massage techniques and found both reduced cellulite severity scores, with no difference between them, but it had no group without massage. A surgeon quoted by ASPS said that without compression garments, patients need many more lymphatic massage sessions to reach the desired contour. Use a therapist trained in post-surgical lymphatic drainage, and stop if massage is painful.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ

Answers on swelling, garment changes, lymphatic massage, sleeping and when you can return to work and exercise.

How long does swelling last after lipo 360?

Most swelling settles over the first six weeks, but some lasts three to six months. The NHS says bruising and swelling can last up to six months. Wearing your garment as advised and walking daily help it go down.

When do I switch from stage 1 to stage 2 faja?

Usually after about one to two weeks, once early swelling falls and the stage 1 garment feels loose. Surgeons quoted by ASPS say stage 2 is typically worn from about two to six weeks. Your surgeon sets the exact timing.

Do I need lymphatic drainage massage after lipo 360?

It’s optional for many people. Trials are small: one 2022 study started massage at one month and saw improvement, but had no comparison group without massage. Compression garments and walking are the foundation of recovery.

When can I go back to work after lipo 360?

Often after about two weeks for desk work, according to an ASPS blog. Physical jobs may need longer, and NHS advice is to avoid strenuous activity for about 10 to 12 weeks.

How should I sleep after lipo 360?

On your back with your upper body slightly raised is common, because the abdomen, flanks and back are all tender. Pillows under the knees can ease pressure. Follow your surgeon’s advice, especially if you also had a BBL.
