Partly. Body contouring at home can lower overall body fat and build muscle through diet and exercise, which changes your shape over months. It can’t remove fat from one chosen spot or tighten loose skin. Studies show exercising a single area doesn’t burn the fat over it, and home devices have little evidence behind them.
| Method | Realistic effect | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Whole-body exercise with diet | Lowers total fat; builds muscle | Strong |
| Targeted exercises (crunches, leg raises) | Stronger muscles; no local fat loss | Trials show no spot reduction |
| Slimming supplements | No meaningful weight loss | Reviews of 120+ trials |
| Home RF or “cavitation” gadgets | Unclear | Little or none |
| Home RF microneedling | Risk of burns and scars | FDA warns against home use |
This guide is part of our body contouring overview, which covers clinic options.
Exercises
A body contouring workout changes shape by lowering total body fat and building muscle, not by burning fat from the area you train.
A 2021 meta-analysis pooled 13 studies with more than 1,100 people and found that training one muscle group didn’t reduce the fat over it, as summarised in The Conversation. In a 12-week trial, adding abdominal exercises to a diet didn’t remove more belly fat than diet alone. Genes explain roughly 60% of where you store fat, so the last areas to slim down are often the ones that bother you most.
Useful body contouring exercises are still worth doing:
- Strength training two or three times a week: squats, lunges, push-ups and rows build muscle, which shapes the arms, legs and buttocks.
- Regular cardio: brisk walking, cycling or swimming raises the energy you burn.
- Core work: planks and dead bugs firm the abdominal wall but won’t burn the fat over it.
- Diet and sleep: a modest, steady calorie deficit and enough sleep make natural body contouring possible.
In my practice, I tell patients that a few months of steady strength training often changes the outline of the arms and thighs more than they expect, even before the scales move.
DIY devices
DIY body contouring gadgets are sold widely, but home versions are weaker than clinic machines and have little published evidence.
Clinic devices for fat freezing, radiofrequency and focused ultrasound give modest results: a 2016 review found typical waist reductions of about 2 to 4 cm in small studies. The same review found part of the change from red-light (low-level laser) treatment returned within two weeks and called the evidence insufficient. No trials of low-power home gadgets were found for this guide.
Some energy devices are risky outside a clinic. In 2025, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned of burns, scarring, fat loss, disfigurement and nerve damage from radiofrequency microneedling and said these devices shouldn’t be used at home. Slimming supplements fare no better: University of Sydney reviews of more than 120 placebo-controlled trials found no clinically meaningful weight loss. How to do body contouring safely is mostly a question of who uses the device and how.
Limits
Body contouring at home can’t remove loose skin, stubborn local fat pockets or separated abdominal muscles after pregnancy.
- Loose skin: after major weight loss, it needs excision surgery; see body contouring after weight loss.
- Stubborn fat with firm skin: liposuction or clinic devices; see our non-invasive body contouring guide.
- Separated abdominal muscles: a tummy tuck can repair them.
See a doctor before starting if you have a heart, joint or other health problem, and stop any device that causes pain, blistering or skin colour change.
Frequently Asked Questions
FAQ
Answers on spot reduction, home devices, how long natural results take and when clinic treatment makes sense.
Can I lose fat from just my stomach?
No. A 2021 meta-analysis of 13 studies found training one area didn’t reduce fat over it. Your body draws on fat stores everywhere. Lowering total body fat through diet and exercise is what slims the stomach over time.
Do home body contouring devices work?
There’s little evidence for low-power home gadgets. Even clinic devices give modest changes of about 2 to 4 cm in small studies. The FDA has warned that radiofrequency microneedling devices shouldn’t be used at home because of burns and scarring.
How long does natural body contouring take?
Usually months. Muscle shape from strength training shows over weeks to months, and fat loss follows a steady calorie deficit. Gradual, sustainable changes to diet, exercise and sleep last better than crash approaches.
When should I consider clinic treatment instead?
When you’re near a stable goal weight and a fat pocket or loose skin hasn’t changed despite months of effort. Fat pockets may suit liposuction or devices; loose skin needs surgery. A consultation can tell which applies.
If home efforts have stalled, you can book a consultation with Metropole Clinic by ABmedi. For all options, return to the body contouring hub.
