Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture: Benefits, Results & Evidence

Not proven. Facial rejuvenation acupuncture has only small, uncontrolled studies behind it. In the best-known pilot, 27 women had five sessions over three weeks; 15 improved on a skin-contour measure, but their own ratings of skin elasticity didn’t change significantly. Reviews in 2020 and 2022 found no randomised controlled trials, so claims can’t yet be confirmed.

How it works

Fine needles are placed in facial and body points; proposed effects on blood flow, muscle tone and collagen remain speculative.

Facial cosmetic acupuncture usually involves a series of sessions with many fine needles in the face, often with points on the body too. A 2022 narrative review of 28 publications noted that proposed mechanisms, such as better blood flow, improved muscle tone and collagen induction, haven’t been demonstrated. It also found that claims of permanent or five-year effects in professional literature aren’t evidence-based.

Method Real effect Evidence
Facial acupuncture Possible small changes Small, uncontrolled studies only
Facial exercise Possible fuller cheeks No controlled trials in a 2014 review
Daily sunscreen Slows skin aging Randomised trial over 4.5 years
Retinoids Smoother fine lines Randomised trials

Evidence

Facial rejuvenation acupuncture studies are small and lack control groups, so no one can say confidently whether it reduces wrinkles.

A 2020 review in Cosmetics summarised the main studies:

  • Yun 2013: 27 women aged 40 to 59 had five sessions over three weeks. A skin-contour measure improved, with 15 improving at least one level and 12 showing no change. Self-rated elasticity didn’t change significantly.
  • Cho 2015: 107 participants in a single-arm study showed shorter smile lines and eye wrinkles; adverse events weren’t reported.
  • Donoyama 2012: a case series of two women found more skin oil but unchanged water content.

The review stated that none of the facial acupuncture trials had a control group. The 2022 narrative review agreed: it found six quasi-experimental studies, usually with fewer than 30 people, and no randomised trials. Its author concluded it isn’t currently possible to say with confidence whether the treatment reduces wrinkles.

Results

Some people report fresher-looking skin after a course of sessions, but without controlled trials it’s hard to separate real effects from expectation.

Without a comparison group, improvements could reflect relaxation, better skincare during the study, the season or hopeful rating. Satisfaction can still be real for the person. In my practice, patients who enjoy acupuncture can continue it, but I ask them to keep daily sunscreen and a retinoid, which have much stronger evidence. Risks

Common effects are bruising, swelling and pain at needle sites; rare risks include skin infections and small inflammatory lumps.

The 2020 review listed bruising, swelling and pain in the 2013 pilot, and reported foreign body granulomas and atypical mycobacterial skin infections as published risks of facial needling. Choose a licensed practitioner who uses sterile, single-use needles. Avoid treatment over active skin infections, and tell the practitioner about blood thinners or recent filler.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ

Answers on how many acupuncture sessions people have, how long effects last, safety and how it compares with Botox or filler.

Can facial acupuncture reduce wrinkles?

It isn’t proven. Small studies without control groups report some improvement, but a 2022 review found no randomised trials and concluded it isn’t possible to say confidently whether it reduces wrinkles. Sunscreen and retinoids have stronger evidence.

How many sessions of facial acupuncture are needed?

There’s no standard. The best-known pilot used five sessions over three weeks. Practitioners often suggest longer courses, but no study has compared different numbers of sessions or measured how long any effect lasts.

Is facial acupuncture safe?

Usually, with a licensed practitioner and sterile needles. Bruising, swelling and soreness are common. Published reports describe rare skin infections and small inflammatory lumps after facial needling, so clean technique and single-use needles matter.

Is facial acupuncture an alternative to Botox or filler?

Not an equivalent one. Toxin and filler have large controlled trials and regulatory approval for specific uses. Acupuncture has only small, uncontrolled studies. Some people prefer it for personal reasons, but expect less predictable results.
