The anti aging ingredients skin care experts trust most are broad-spectrum sunscreen and retinoids, with vitamin C, niacinamide and a moisturiser as support. A 4.5-year trial found daily sunscreen users were 24% less likely to show skin aging. Apply sunscreen every morning, a retinoid at night, and give any routine three to six months before judging it.
This guide is part of our facial rejuvenation overview, which also covers in-clinic treatments.
Ingredients
Build a simple routine around ingredients with real evidence, and add one new product at a time so you can spot irritation.
- Morning sunscreen: broad-spectrum SPF 30 or more on the face, neck and chest, reapplied every two hours outdoors, as Mayo Clinic advises. In the Australian trial of 903 adults under 55, daily sunscreen reduced skin aging over 4.5 years compared with occasional use.
- Night retinoid: a 2007 randomised trial found 0.4% retinol improved fine wrinkles after 24 weeks. Mayo Clinic notes that adapalene is available over the counter and stronger retinoids by prescription.
- Vitamin C and niacinamide: both are recommended by Mayo Clinic as wrinkle-cream ingredients; vitamin C usually goes on in the morning.
- Moisturiser: traps water in the skin and softens dryness lines.
Many anti aging Japanese routines focus on gentle cleansing, hydration and strict sun protection, which fits this evidence well. Be cautious with bold claims. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says cosmetics don’t need approval before sale, and a product that claims to remove wrinkles or boost collagen would legally be a drug.
When to see a doctor
See a dermatologist or doctor for persistent irritation from a retinoid, new or changing spots, or if you’re pregnant and want to use retinoids. If skincare isn’t enough, our laser, IPL and PRP guide covers the next step.
Diet
An anti aging diet for women rich in vitamin C and healthy fats was linked to fewer wrinkles in a large US study, though it can’t prove cause.
A 2007 study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition used data from 4,025 American women aged 40 to 74. Higher vitamin C intake was linked to less wrinkled appearance and dryness, and higher linoleic acid intake, a fat found in vegetable oils, nuts and seeds, to less dryness and thinning. Higher fat and carbohydrate intakes overall were linked to more wrinkles. The study was observational, so diet may partly reflect other healthy habits. In the sunscreen trial, beta-carotene supplements made no difference to skin aging.
In my practice, I see the most visible anti aging transformation in patients who quit smoking and start daily sunscreen, more than from any single product.
Neck and chest
Anti aging neck and chest care starts with sunscreen, because these areas get heavy sun and are often skipped in routines.
Mayo Clinic notes that wrinkles form most on sun-exposed areas, including the face, neck, hands and forearms, and that deep, coarse wrinkles develop on the back of the neck after repeated sun exposure. Extend sunscreen and moisturiser down to the chest every day. Neck skin is thinner and more sensitive, so introduce retinoids there slowly. For loose neck skin or bands that skincare can’t change, see our neck lift overview.
Frequently Asked Questions
FAQ
Answers on homemade anti-aging creams and masks, tips for your twenties, makeup tips and how long routines take to work.
Are homemade anti aging creams, serums or face masks safe?
They carry risks. Kitchen recipes can’t be tested for preservatives, contamination or stable strength, and acids or citrus can burn or sensitise skin, especially near the eyes. Simple store-bought sunscreen and retinoids have far better evidence than any homemade cream, serum or mask.
What are the most useful anti aging tips in your 20s?
Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen, not smoking and gentle cleansing. A trial in adults under 55 found daily sunscreen reduced skin aging over 4.5 years. A low-strength retinoid can be added later if your skin tolerates it.
What are good anti aging make up tips?
Use a moisturiser and thin, flexible foundation, press product in rather than rubbing, and set lightly with fine powder only where needed. Heavy matte layers settle into lines. Wear sunscreen under makeup every day.
How long does an anti-aging routine take to work?
Usually months. The retinol trial measured results at 24 weeks, and Mayo Clinic says results from wrinkle creams take weeks to months. Sunscreen’s main benefit is preventing future aging, which shows over years.
