Brow Lift Recovery Day by Day

Brow lift recovery usually means a head wrap or tape for a day or two, swelling and bruising that drift toward the eyes during the first week, stitches or clips out at around 7 to 10 days, and a return to work at 10 to 14 days. Scalp numbness and itching can last months.

This day-by-day guide is part of our brow lift overview. Always follow your own surgeon’s instructions first.

Brow lift recovery days 1 to 7

The first week brings tightness, swelling and bruising around the eyes, with rest, a raised head and no ice or heat on the forehead.

Day What you’ll notice What to do
Day 1 Tape or head wrap; possible small drain; tightness and a dull ache Rest with head raised; have an adult stay with you
Day 2 Wrap often removed; swelling increasing Take prescribed pain relief; keep incisions dry until allowed
Days 3 to 4 Swelling and bruising move down toward the eyelids Sleep on your back with extra pillows; avoid bending
Days 5 to 7 Swelling starts to ease; scalp numbness and itching Gentle hair washing if cleared; no scratching

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS, US) says the forehead may be taped or the head wrapped to limit swelling and bruising, and a thin drain may be used. Keep your head raised for as long as your surgeon recommends. ASPS also advises not to apply ice or heat to the treated area. In a 2015 series of temporal brow lifts, the compression bandage stayed on for two days.

In my practice, I warn patients that bruising often appears around the eyes on day three, even though the surgery was on the forehead. It’s gravity, not a new problem.

Weeks 2 to 4

Stitches or clips usually come out by day 10, and most people return to work and normal activity at 10 to 14 days.

Time What you’ll notice What to do
Days 7 to 10 Stitches or staples removed Attend your follow-up visit
Days 10 to 14 Initial wound healing complete; bruising fading Return to work and light activity; cover bruising with makeup if you wish
Weeks 3 to 4 Most swelling gone; brow may look slightly high or tight Gradually resume exercise when your surgeon agrees

ASPS says you should be ready for work and normal activity after 10 to 14 days, which matches the time for initial wound healing. Vigorous exercise should wait for your surgeon’s approval. In the 2015 series, staples were removed after 10 days. Our endoscopic forehead lift guide covers recovery from that technique week by week.

Healing tips

Good brow lift healing depends on protecting incisions, avoiding strain, not smoking and knowing which symptoms need a call to your surgeon.

  • Don’t smoke or vape; it slows wound healing.
  • Avoid force, friction or pressure on the incisions, as ASPS advises. Skip tight hats and headbands at first.
  • Use only the hair products and dyes your surgeon allows until incisions have healed.
  • Protect scars from sun; ASPS says daily sun protection helps preserve your result.
  • Expect numbness, itching and tingling on the scalp as nerves recover. ASPS lists intense itching among possible effects.

Call your surgeon if you notice

  • Swelling that suddenly increases on one side, or severe pain.
  • Fever, spreading redness or discharge from an incision.
  • Inability to raise one eyebrow after swelling settles.
  • Chest pain or shortness of breath, which needs emergency care.

Complete recovery may take several months, according to ASPS. For how the final result should look, see our brow lift before and after guide, and if something seems wrong, read brow lift gone wrong.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ

Answers on brow lift recovery day by day, pain levels, numbness and when you can safely exercise again.

What does brow lift recovery look like day by day?

Days one and two bring a head wrap and tightness. By days three and four, bruising often moves down to the eyelids. Stitches or clips come out around days 7 to 10, and most people return to work at 10 to 14 days, according to ASPS.

How painful is brow lift recovery?

Most people feel tightness, pressure and a dull ache rather than sharp pain, usually manageable with prescribed medicine for a few days. Pain that keeps increasing, especially with swelling on one side, needs a call to your surgeon.

How long does numbness last after a brow lift?

Numbness and itching on the scalp and forehead are common and usually improve gradually over several months as nerves recover. ASPS lists persistent numbness and changes in skin sensation as possible risks, so ask your surgeon what to expect for your technique.

When can I exercise after a brow lift?

Light walking can start early. ASPS advises avoiding vigorous activity for as long as your surgeon recommends. Many surgeons allow gradual return to exercise from about weeks three to four, once incisions have healed and swelling has settled.
