The mommy makeover recovery timeline runs about two weeks before desk work, four to six weeks before lifting and the gym, about three months to normal activity, and six months to a year for final results. You’ll need help at home at first, a support bra and abdominal compression, and you shouldn’t lift children for several weeks.
This guide is part of our mommy makeover overview, which explains procedures and cost.
Week-by-week timeline
Mommy makeover recovery week by week follows the slowest-healing procedure in your plan, which is usually the tummy tuck.
| Time | What’s normal | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Supervised overnight care; tightness, pain | Short walks with help |
| Week 1 | Swelling, bruising; drains if used | Rest bent at the waist; walk often; take medicines |
| Week 2 | Pain easing; standing straighter | Desk work for many; driving once safe |
| Weeks 3 to 4 | More energy; swelling going down | Longer walks; still no lifting |
| Weeks 4 to 6 | Most daily tasks | Gym and lifting gradually if cleared |
| Weeks 6 to 8 | Binder off for many | Build up exercise |
| 3 months | Normal activities | Core training if cleared |
| 6 to 12 months | Final results; scars fading | Final review |
American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS, US) blogs advise at least 24 hours of supervised recovery, about two weeks off work, no gym or heavy lifting for four to six weeks, and say normal activities resume at about three months. ASPS says your breasts will be in a bandage or support bra, your abdomen in a compression garment, and healing takes several weeks. Mayo Clinic advises an abdominal binder for about six to eight weeks after a tummy tuck.
Sleeping position
For mommy makeover recovery week by week sleeping position, rest on your back, upper body raised and knees bent.
- Weeks 1 to 2: back sleeping in a recliner or bed propped with pillows, knees bent, to take tension off the abdominal incision. The NHS advises keeping knees bent in bed after a tummy tuck.
- Weeks 2 to 6: gradually flatten as you stand straighter; stay off your front to protect the breasts.
- After 6 weeks: side sleeping is often allowed once your surgeon agrees; front sleeping usually waits longer after breast surgery.
In my practice, I suggest a pillow wedge rather than stacked pillows, because it doesn’t slide during the night.
When can I lift my toddler?
Plan on not lifting your toddler for about six weeks, until your surgeon confirms the muscle repair has healed.
ASPS blogs say to avoid lifting heavy objects, including children, during early recovery, and to arrange help with childcare. Mayo Clinic advises avoiding lifting, straining and quick bending for six weeks after a tummy tuck. A surgeon writing for HCPLive says repaired muscles are about 90% healed at six to eight weeks. We didn’t find a source giving a safe weight for lifting a child, so ask your surgeon before you lift.
- Teach your toddler to climb onto the sofa or into the car seat with a step.
- Sit down and let your child come to your lap.
- Arrange help for bath time, cot and car seat for the first weeks.
Recovery tips

- Wear garments as directed: support bra and abdominal compression.
- Don’t smoke: an ASPS blog advises stopping at least a month before and six weeks after.
- Eat nourishing food and drink water, as ASPS recommends.
- Prepare the house before surgery; see our mommy makeover recovery must-haves checklist.
- Know warning signs: fever, spreading redness, one swollen leg, chest pain or sudden breathlessness need urgent care.

Frequently Asked Questions
FAQ
Answers on lifting a toddler, sleeping position, returning to work and when the swelling finally goes down.
How long after a mommy makeover can I lift my toddler?
Usually not for about six weeks. ASPS blogs advise against lifting children early in recovery, and Mayo Clinic advises no lifting or straining for six weeks after a tummy tuck. Ask your surgeon before lifting, as no safe weight is set.
What is the right sleeping position after a mommy makeover?
On your back with your upper body raised and knees bent, often in a recliner, for the first couple of weeks. This protects the abdominal incision and the breasts. Side sleeping usually waits until your surgeon clears it.
When can I go back to work?
About two weeks for desk work, according to ASPS blogs. Jobs involving lifting or standing all day need longer, often four to six weeks. Plan childcare help for the same period.
How long does swelling last?
Most swelling eases over a few weeks, but it can take months to settle fully. An ASPS blog says final results show at six months to a year. Compression garments and walking help.
