Mini Neck Lift: Before & After, Candidates and Recovery

A mini neck lift suits people with mild jowls and slightly loose neck skin, rather than heavy sagging or strong bands. It uses a shorter incision around the ear, so recovery is quicker and scars are smaller. The trade-off is a more limited result than a full neck lift, which also tightens the muscle and treats more skin.

This guide is part of our neck lift overview. It compares the mini option with a full lift and with chin liposuction.

What a mini neck lift is

This shorter operation tightens skin and tissue through a limited incision around the ear, trading some lifting power for smaller scars.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS, US) describes a limited-incision neck lift as one made only around the ear, with more limited results than the traditional incision that runs into the hair behind the ear. StatPearls, a peer-reviewed medical reference, says short-scar lifts recover faster but offer limited neck recontouring.

The name isn’t standardized, so ask any surgeon what “mini” means in their hands. Typical features:

  • A short incision around the earlobe, sometimes with a small cut under the chin.
  • Skin and shallow tissue tightened; limited or no platysma muscle work.
  • Often combined with liposuction under the chin.

Mini vs full neck lift

The mini version has shorter scars and recovery but treats less; a full neck lift handles heavier sagging, bands and more loose skin.

Factor Mini neck lift Full neck lift
Incision Around the ear only Sideburn, around the ear, into the hair behind it, plus under the chin
Treats Mild jowls and skin laxity Loose skin, fat, muscle bands and jowls
Recovery Faster Stitches out about day 7; no heavy lifting for 4 to 6 weeks
Result More limited Fuller recontouring
US fee, 2024 No separate figure published $7,500 to $13,000 (ASPS)
Suits Earlier aging, good skin quality Moderate to heavy laxity or visible bands

Age is a rough guide. ASPS notes mini facelift patients tend to be in their mid-30s to late 40s, while traditional lifts peak between 55 and 69. StatPearls describes the short-scar S-lift as typical for people around 40 to 50 without severe jowl or neck laxity.

Mini neck lift before and after

Expect a subtly tighter jawline and smoother upper neck; a mini lift won’t remove strong bands or large amounts of loose skin.

A mini neck lift before and after comparison typically shows modest changes: softer jowls and a slightly cleaner jaw. Swelling settles over weeks, and scars take up to six months to mature, according to ASPS. If the lower neck or bands still bother you afterwards, a full lift may be needed later.

In my practice, I’d rather tell someone a mini lift won’t be enough than have them pay for surgery twice. Our neck lift results guide explains how to judge photos.

Chin lipo and neck lift

Chin liposuction alone suits fat with good skin tone; when skin is loose, combining chin lipo and neck lift avoids sagging after fat removal.

ASPS says fat under the chin can be removed with liposuction through a small cut under the chin, as part of a neck lift. On its own, liposuction removes fat but doesn’t tighten loose skin. The 2024 ASPS fee range for liposuction under the chin was $3,000 to $5,500, well below a full neck lift. Our guide to liposuction by area covers chin lipo in more detail.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ

Answers on mini neck lift recovery, how long results last, scars, cost and whether it can be done under local anaesthesia.

How long does a mini neck lift last?

Results last years, but less surgery usually means less lifting, so changes may show sooner than after a full lift. No published study gives a reliable figure for mini neck lifts specifically. Sun protection and a stable weight help any result last longer.

How long is recovery from a mini neck lift?

Recovery is usually shorter than after a full lift, since less tissue is moved. Many people return to desk work within one to two weeks. Bruising and swelling still need time, and strenuous exercise should wait until your surgeon clears you.

Can a mini neck lift be done under local anaesthesia?

Sometimes. StatPearls notes that short-scar lifts such as the MACS lift can possibly be done under local anaesthesia. Many surgeons still prefer sedation. The choice depends on how much is done, your health and your comfort.

Is a mini neck lift cheaper?

Usually, because surgery is shorter, but no society publishes a separate price. ASPS reports a 2024 US range of $7,500 to $13,000 for neck lifts generally and $3,000 to $5,500 for chin liposuction. Ask for an itemized quote.
