Neck Lift Before and After: Typical Results and How Long They Last

Neck lift before and after comparisons usually show a sharper jawline, a clearer angle between chin and neck, smaller jowls and softer vertical bands. Swelling hides the change at first, so results emerge over several weeks to months. They last years, but the neck keeps aging, and it tends to lose more of its improvement over time than the face.

This guide belongs to our neck lift overview. It explains what results to expect and how to read photos critically.

Typical results

Neck lift results usually include a cleaner jawline, less fullness under the chin, fewer bands and smoother skin, revealed gradually as swelling settles.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS, US) lists the problems a neck lift can improve: fat and loose skin along the jaw, fat under the chin, loose neck skin, and the vertical muscle bands sometimes called a “turkey wattle”. A typical neck lift before after set reflects those changes.

According to ASPS, visible results appear as swelling and bruising fade, which can take several weeks to months. Incision lines can take up to six months to mature. Results can’t be promised, and some people need a second operation to fine-tune them.

How to judge a result

What to look at Sign of a good result Warning sign
Jawline Continuous line from chin to ear Jowls still breaking the line
Chin-neck angle Clear angle in profile Hollow or over-thinned centre (“cobra neck”)
Bands Softer or absent at rest Bands still tight at rest
Earlobes Natural shape Pulled-down “pixie ear”
Scars Fine, hidden in creases and hair Wide or raised scars

The warning signs come from StatPearls, a peer-reviewed medical reference, which describes cobra-neck and pixie-ear deformities as signs of poor technique.

Deep neck lift before & after

A deep neck lift also treats structures under the platysma muscle, such as deep fat or glands, which can give a sharper profile in fuller necks.

Standard neck lifts tighten the skin and the platysma muscle, often through a small cut under the chin. In a deep neck lift, the surgeon also works beneath the muscle. That can help people whose fullness comes from deeper tissue rather than fat just under the skin.

Removing too much tissue carries risk, though. StatPearls notes that over-removing fat in the centre of the neck creates the hollow “cobra neck” shape. In my practice, I’d rather leave a little fullness than create a hollow that’s hard to correct. A deep neck lift before and after comparison should look natural from the side as well as the front.

How long results last

Results last years, but research suggests the neck loses more of its improvement over time than other parts of the face after surgery.

In 2012 ASPS reported a study of 50 patients followed for an average of five and a half years after face and neck lift surgery. About 76% still looked younger than before surgery. The chin-neck angle, however, had lost about 70% of its improvement, the largest loss of any area measured.

StatPearls adds that minor touch-ups are often done within one to two years, and many people go five to ten years before another operation. Sun protection and a stable weight help results hold. Our neck lift recovery guide covers the healing phase in detail.

Reading photos

  • Compare photos taken with the same lighting, distance and head angle.
  • Check the date: early photos show swelling, not the final shape.
  • Look for profile views, where the chin-neck angle is easiest to judge.

Men’s necks differ in skin thickness and beard hair; see the male neck lift guide. If your changes are mild, a mini neck lift may be enough.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ

Answers on when results show, neck lifting before and after photos, longevity and what happens if you’re unhappy with the outcome.

When will I see my final neck lift results?

The shape improves as swelling and bruising fade, which ASPS says takes several weeks to months. Incision lines take up to six months to mature. Most surgeons judge the result after several months rather than in the first few weeks.

What should neck lifting before and after photos show?

Reliable photos show the same person in matched lighting, distance and head position, including a side view. They should be taken months after surgery, once swelling has gone. Heavily edited or front-only images make it hard to judge the chin-neck angle.

Is the result permanent?

No. Surgery resets the neck, but aging continues. In a study reported by ASPS, the chin-neck angle lost about 70% of its improvement by around five and a half years, even though most patients still looked younger than before surgery.

What if I’m not happy with the result?

Wait until swelling settles before judging. If there’s still a problem, small revisions are common; StatPearls notes minor touch-ups are often done within one to two years. Talk to your surgeon about timing, since early revision on swollen tissue is rarely advised.
