Natural Eye Lift: Exercises, Face Yoga & Gua Sha – Do They Work?

An eye lift natural routine, such as exercises, face yoga or gua sha, hasn’t been shown to lift hooded lids or remove under-eye bags. One small study of facial exercise found fuller-looking cheeks, but it didn’t measure the eyelids. Massage may reduce morning puffiness briefly. Excess skin and fat bags need medical treatment to change.

Eye lift natural methods: the short answer

Home methods can help puffiness and how relaxed you look, but they can’t remove loose eyelid skin, fat bags or raise a low brow.

Method Realistic effect Evidence
Eye and face exercises No proven eyelid lift One small uncontrolled face study
Face yoga Same as above Same study
Gua sha and massage Brief reduction in puffiness No eyelid studies found
Cold compress Short-term de-puffing General advice
Sleep, salt, alcohol Less morning swelling General advice

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS, US) explains that hooding comes from loose upper-lid skin, puffy fat or a dropped brow, and bags from fat deposits under the eye. These are structural changes. A DIY eye lift or eye lift hack can’t remove tissue, which is why lasting change needs treatment.

Exercises

Eye lift exercise and face yoga programmes are safe for most people, but no study shows they lift the eyelids.

The most cited study, published in JAMA Dermatology in 2018, asked women aged 40 to 65 to do 30 minutes of facial exercises daily for eight weeks, then every other day until week 20. Of 27 who enrolled, 16 finished. Their estimated age fell from 50.8 to 48.1 years, mostly because the upper and lower cheeks looked fuller.

The study had no control group, lost many participants and had a co-author who founded the exercise programme. It didn’t assess the eyelids. So face yoga for eye lift claims remain unproven. Enjoy eye lift yoga? It’s unlikely to harm you; just don’t expect it to fix hooding.

In my practice, I see people who have done eye exercises for years and are disappointed. I’d rather they knew upfront what exercise can and can’t change.

Gua sha & massage

Gua sha for eye lift results is a temporary de-puffing effect at most; be gentle, as eyelid skin is thin and easily irritated.

Gentle eye lift massage or gua sha may move fluid and reduce morning puffiness for a few hours. We found no studies showing that either lifts the lids or brows. Use light pressure, stay on the bone around the eye rather than on the lid itself, and keep oils out of the eyes.

A few habits help more consistently: sleeping with your head slightly raised, limiting salt and alcohol in the evening, treating allergies, and using a cold compress in the morning.

Limits

If skin rests on your lashes, bags are large or your vision is affected, home methods won’t help and a medical assessment is worthwhile.

See a doctor if your lids droop more on one side, change quickly or block your vision; the cause may be ptosis, which needs different treatment. If you want a lift without surgery, injectables can give small, temporary changes; see our non-surgical eye lift guide. For an instant cosmetic effect, our eye lifting makeup guide shows simple techniques. Products such as tapes and patches are covered in eye lift creams and patches.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ

Answers on eye lift gua sha, how to lift your eyes at home, how long exercises take and when to see a doctor.

Does an eye lift with gua sha work?

It may reduce puffiness for a few hours by moving fluid, but no study shows it lifts the lids or brows. When using gua sha, keep pressure light, work on the bone around the eye rather than the lid, and stop if your skin becomes red or sore.

How can I lift my eyes at home?

You can’t permanently lift the lids at home. You can reduce puffiness with a cold compress, sleep with your head raised and use makeup to create a lifted look. Daily sunscreen and not smoking help slow further skin aging around the eyes.

How long do eye exercises take to work?

There’s no good evidence they lift the eyelids at any point. The one notable study ran for 20 weeks and found fuller-looking cheeks, not eyelid changes, in a small group without a comparison group. Exercises may feel relaxing, but expect little visible change.

When should I see a doctor about droopy eyes?

See a doctor if one lid droops more than the other, the change happens suddenly, or the lid blocks your vision. These can signal ptosis or another medical cause. Sudden drooping with double vision or weakness needs urgent care.
