Eye lift before and after comparisons usually show more visible lid space and less hooding after upper surgery, and flatter, smoother under-eye contours after lower surgery. Bruising fades over a couple of weeks, and most people look presentable by 10 to 14 days. Final results take a few months, as swelling settles and scars soften.
This guide is part of our eye lift overview. It explains what changes, when, and how to read photos.
Upper eyelid
An eye lift before and after on the upper lids typically shows less hanging skin, a clearer crease and a more open, alert look.
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS, US) says upper eyelid surgery treats loose or sagging skin that forms folds, sometimes enough to block vision, and puffy fat. Through an incision in the natural crease, the surgeon removes skin and may adjust fat and muscle. The scar sits in the fold, according to the National Health Service (NHS, UK).
What upper surgery can’t change matters too. If your brow has dropped, removing lid skin alone can pull the brow lower. If the lid margin itself is low, you need ptosis repair. Our upper eye lift guide covers this in more detail.
Lower eyelid
Lower blepharoplasty results usually include smaller bags, a smoother lid-cheek junction and, if skin is removed, fewer fine lines below the lashes.
There are two routes, according to ASPS. An incision below the lashes allows removal of skin and repositioning of fat. An incision inside the lid lets the surgeon move or remove fat without an outer scar but doesn’t remove skin. ASPS adds that a laser or chemical peel may be suggested to improve lower-lid discoloration.
Lower-lid surgery doesn’t fix dark pigment, crow’s feet or deep hollows on its own. Our under eye lift guide compares surgery with threads and filler.
How to judge a result
| Area | Good result | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Upper crease | Even height on both sides | Uneven or overly high crease |
| Lid closure | Eyes close fully | Gap when closing (lagophthalmos) |
| Lower lid position | Lid rests against the eye | Lid pulled down or rolled out |
| Volume | Smooth, natural fullness | Hollow, sunken look |
| Scars | Fine, hidden in crease or lash line | Thick or visible scars |
Results timeline
Eye lift results appear gradually: bruising fades over two weeks, most people look presentable by day 14 and final healing takes months.
| Time | What you’ll see |
|---|---|
| Days 1 to 3 | Swelling, bruising, tight lids; watery or dry eyes |
| About 1 week | Stitches or strips removed; swelling easing |
| 10 to 14 days | Presentable for most people (ASPS) |
| Several weeks | Bruising and redness fully fade (NHS) |
| A few months | Scars soften; final shape settles |
Results are long-lasting (ASPS), though the face keeps aging. Results can’t be promised, and some people need a second procedure. In my practice, I take standard photos before surgery and again at about three months, using the same light and angle, so patients compare like with like.
When you look at eye lift before after photos online, check the date, lighting, head angle and whether makeup is worn. Celebrity comparisons are often guesses. Prefer a cheaper first step? See our non-surgical eye lift guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
FAQ
Answers on when eye lift results show, how long they last, visible scars and what to do if the result looks uneven.
When will I see the final result of my eye lift?
Most people look presentable within 10 to 14 days, according to ASPS, but final healing takes a few months. Scars can feel tight and look pink for a few months before fading, so judge the result after swelling has fully settled.
How long do eye lift results last?
ASPS describes the results as long-lasting. The skin, brows and cheeks continue to age, so some people choose further treatment years later. Sun protection and not smoking help keep the result looking fresh for longer.
Will people see my scars?
Upper scars sit in the natural crease and lower ones just below the lashes or inside the lid. The NHS says scars can be visible and tight for a few months but usually fade until they are barely noticeable.
What if my eyes look uneven after surgery?
Some unevenness is normal while swelling settles, since each side heals at its own pace. If asymmetry remains after a few months, talk to your surgeon. ASPS notes that another procedure is sometimes needed to refine the result.
