Male Neck Lift: Before & After and What Men Should Know

A neck lift for men tightens loose neck skin, reduces fat under the chin and softens muscle bands, aiming for a defined, angular jawline rather than a softer look. Men made up about 12% of US neck lifts in 2024. Men carry roughly twice the risk of bleeding under the skin, so blood pressure control matters.

This guide is part of our neck lift overview. It covers the points that differ for male patients.

Neck lift men: how the male neck differs

Men usually want a sharp jaw angle, have thicker skin and beard hair, and face a higher bleeding risk, so planning differs from women.

According to 2024 statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS, US), 2,773 neck lifts were done in men, about 12% of the total. The surgery itself is the same: incisions around the ears and under the chin, fat removal or reshaping, platysma muscle tightening and skin trimming. A few things change for men:

  • Shape goals: most men want a strong, straight jawline and a clear angle under the chin, without a “pulled” look.
  • Beard line: when skin is lifted, beard-bearing skin can move toward the ear. Incision placement and shaving plans need discussion.
  • Hairline: short hair hides incisions less well, so the surgeon may adjust where they run.
  • Bleeding risk: StatPearls, a peer-reviewed medical reference, reports that men have about twice the risk of hematoma after facelift surgery.

In my practice, I check blood pressure at every pre-op visit with male patients. Uncontrolled pressure is one of the main hematoma risks, and it’s easy to fix before surgery.

Neck lift before and after men

Typical male results show a straighter jawline, less fullness under the chin and fewer visible bands, appearing over weeks to months.

The changes in a male neck lift before and after comparison mirror those in women: a cleaner jaw, a deeper chin-neck angle and smoother skin. ASPS says the final shape emerges as swelling and bruising fade over several weeks to months, and incisions take up to six months to mature.

When reviewing photos, check for:

  • A natural sideburn and beard line, not one pulled behind the ear.
  • Hidden scars in profile, especially with short hair.
  • A neck that matches the face. If the jowls have dropped too, a face and neck lift may give a more balanced result.

Our neck lift results guide explains how to judge photos in more detail.

Recovery

Recovery is similar for men and women, with stitches out at about a week, but men should be strict about blood pressure and early activity.

StatPearls describes a typical course: a dressing and drains for about 24 hours, stitches removed around day 7, head raised for one to two weeks, and no heavy lifting, straining or bending for four to six weeks. ASPS advises keeping the head straight and not icing the neck.

For men, a few extras help:

  • Take blood pressure medicines exactly as prescribed, and avoid anti-inflammatory painkillers unless your surgeon approves them.
  • Delay gym training, especially heavy lifting, for the full period your surgeon advises.
  • Ask when you can shave near the incisions, and use an electric razor at first.
  • Stop smoking well before surgery; StatPearls advises stopping at least two to four weeks before and about a month after.

The neck lift recovery timeline goes through each stage.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ

Answers on male neck lift scars, beard hair, age, combining with a facelift and when men can return to the gym.

Will a male neck lift leave visible scars?

Incisions run around and behind the ears and under the chin. With short hair they’re harder to hide, so surgeons adjust their placement for men. ASPS says incision lines can take up to six months to mature, and scars fade without disappearing.

Will my beard grow in the wrong place?

When the skin is lifted, beard-bearing skin can shift toward or behind the ear. Careful planning keeps this small. Ask your surgeon how they handle the beard line and when you can start shaving again near the incisions.

What age do men usually have a neck lift?

There’s no set age. Most US neck lifts in 2024 were in people aged 55 to 69, according to ASPS, but men in their 40s with early fullness or bands also have surgery. Skin quality and health matter more than age.

When can I go back to the gym?

Light walking starts early. StatPearls advises avoiding heavy lifting, straining and bending for four to six weeks after face and neck lift surgery. Raising blood pressure too soon increases the chance of bleeding under the skin, so follow your surgeon’s timing.
