Eye Lift Makeup: Concealer & Eyeliner Tricks

Eye lifting makeup works by guiding the eye upward and outward. Brighten the inner and outer corners with concealer, contour softly above the crease, angle eyeliner toward the tail of the brow and keep shadow out of the hooded fold. For an evening out, clear eyelid tape can hold back a heavy fold. It lasts only while worn.

This tutorial is part of our eye lift overview. It shows makeup techniques, then explains when a medical check makes sense.

Concealer lift

Placing concealer in an upward-pointing triangle under the eye and at the outer corner draws attention up and brightens shadows.

  1. Prep: apply a light eye cream and let it absorb, so concealer doesn’t settle into lines.
  2. Under-eye triangle: dot concealer from the inner corner, down toward the cheek and back up to the outer corner, then blend outward and upward.
  3. Outer corner flick: add a small diagonal stroke of concealer from the outer corner up toward the brow tail, to sharpen the line of the liner later.
  4. Soft contour: with a matte shade a little darker than your skin, shade just above the natural crease, where the brow bone meets the lid. This eye lift contour creates depth on hooded lids.
  5. Set lightly: press a thin layer of powder under the eye to stop creasing.

An eye lift with concealer hides the shadow under bags but can’t flatten them. For puffy bags, use a thin layer; heavy coverage can make them look bigger.

Eyeliner

Angle eye lift eyeliner toward the tail of the brow, keep the line thin at the inner corner and avoid a heavy lower line.

  1. Find your angle: picture a line from the outer edge of your nostril through the outer corner of the eye toward the brow tail.
  2. Draw the wing first: with your eyes open, sketch a short flick along that angle. On hooded lids, drawing with the eye open shows where the line will sit.
  3. Connect thinly: join the wing to the lash line with a fine line, thickest at the outer third.
  4. Tightline lightly: dark pencil along the upper lash roots adds definition without taking up lid space.
  5. Keep the lower line soft: smudge it only at the outer third, or skip it. A full heavy lower line pulls the eye down.

A classic lift eye makeup look often adds a light shimmer to the centre of the lid and a lifted lash curl. In my practice, I’ve noticed that a well-groomed brow tail makes as much difference as liner, because the brow frames the whole eye.

Tape tutorial

Transparent eyelid tape tucks a hooded fold into the crease; apply it to clean, oil-free skin before makeup and remove it gently.

An eye lift tape tutorial in short:

  1. Clean the lid and remove any oil or cream.
  2. With eyes open, look straight ahead and find where the fold rests.
  3. Close the eye and place the clear strip just above the natural crease, following its curve.
  4. Open the eye. The fold should tuck above the tape. Adjust if it looks uneven.
  5. Apply shadow and liner over the tape gently.
  6. At night, soak the strip with an oil-based remover before peeling it off.

Adhesives can irritate thin eyelid skin. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advises checking ingredients in eye-area adhesives, as they can cause allergic reactions. More on strips is in our eye lift creams and patches guide.

Safety tips for eye makeup

  • Don’t share eye cosmetics, and use clean applicators for testers (FDA).
  • Replace mascara two to four months after opening.
  • Stop using eye makeup if your eye is infected or the skin is inflamed, and discard what you were using.
  • Avoid kohl, which isn’t approved for cosmetic use in the US and has been linked to lead poisoning.

When to see a doctor

If skin rests on your lashes, one lid droops more than the other, or makeup can’t hide the change, a medical assessment can find the cause. See our guides to hooded eyes and ptosis surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ

Answers on a quick eye lift tutorial, makeup for hooded eyes, concealer for bags and whether makeup can replace surgery.

What is the quickest eye lift tutorial?

Brighten the outer corner with a small upward stroke of concealer, draw a short eyeliner flick toward the brow tail with your eyes open, curl your lashes and apply mascara mainly to the outer lashes. This takes a few minutes and gives a lifted look.

How should I do eye makeup for hooded lids?

Apply shadow and liner with your eyes open so you can see where they’ll show. Place a soft matte contour just above the crease, keep liner thin at the inner corner and angle the wing up. Clear eyelid tape can help for special occasions.

Can concealer hide under-eye bags?

It can hide the shadow beneath a bag but not the bulge itself. Use a thin layer, place it in the dark crease under the bag rather than on top, and set it lightly. Heavy concealer on the bag can make it look larger.

Can makeup replace an eye lift?

For mild hooding, many people find makeup is enough. It can’t remove skin or fat, though, and it washes off each night. If excess skin blocks your vision or tape becomes a daily need, it may be worth discussing options with a surgeon.
