Rhinoplasty for men usually aims for a straight, strong bridge, a tip that isn’t turned up and a nose in proportion with a broader face and jaw. The operation is the same as for women, but the target shape differs, and over-reduction looks more obvious on a male face. Most men return to desk work in about a week.
This guide is part of our rhinoplasty overview. Men had 7,018 cosmetic rhinoplasties performed by American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS, US) members in 2024, about 14% of the total. Here’s what’s specific to them.
How rhinoplasty for men differs
Male rhinoplasty keeps a stronger bridge and less tip rotation, often treats breathing at the same time, and must suit heavier skin and a larger face.
Men often come in with a hump, a crooked nose from an old sports injury or a blocked side. ASPS (US) explains that rhinoplasty can reduce a hump, narrow the bridge, refine the tip and straighten a deviated septum to improve breathing, all in one operation. For a nose job guy who boxed or played rugby, the functional side can matter as much as the look.
Skin is another difference. Many men have thicker, oilier skin over the tip. An ASPS patient article lists thick, sebaceous skin among factors that lengthen healing, and a small trial in JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery (2016) found that taping after surgery reduced swelling only in thick-skinned noses.
At consultation, the first thing I look at in men is whether the bridge suits the jaw and brow. A bridge that’s too low or a tip that’s too turned up can make a male face look unbalanced, even if the nose itself looks “neat”.
Rhinoplasty before and after men
Rhinoplasty before and after photos for men usually show a hump reduced, a straighter nose and a tip that stays strong, not small or pinched.
| What to check | Natural male result | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Bridge | Straight or very slightly convex, clear line from brow | Scooped or too low |
| Tip | Defined, not turned up | Pinched, upturned or nostrils very visible |
| Width | In proportion with the face | Narrow nose on a broad face |
| Breathing | Same or better | Worse than before surgery |
Swelling hides the result for months. ASPS notes final results can take a year or longer, with the tip settling last. For more on judging photos, see our nose job before and after guide.
Masculine vs feminine nose aesthetics
Masculine noses tend to have a straighter, higher bridge and less tip rotation; feminine noses often have a slight curve and a more lifted tip.
Studies of nasal angles have often used male profiles. In a 2016 study in Facial Plastic Surgery, patients, laypeople and clinicians rated a male profile most attractive when the angle between forehead and nose was about 130 degrees, and they rated hump-like profiles as least attractive. A companion study the same year found an ideal angle of about 30 degrees between the nose and the face, with an acceptable range of 27 to 36 degrees.
These numbers are guides, not targets. They came from one white male profile, so ethnicity and personal taste matter. Many men want to keep a strong nose and simply lose a bump. If you’re from an East Asian, African or Middle Eastern background, our ethnic rhinoplasty guide explains how plans differ.
What I tell male patients before surgery is that the surest way to look like you’ve had nothing done is to remove less than you think.
Recovery for men
Most men return to desk work in about a week, can train lightly after two to three weeks and should avoid contact sports for longer.
- Week 1: splint and stitches out; bruising under the eyes mostly gone (ASPS, US).
- Weeks 2 to 3: light exercise and normal activity can resume (ASPS article).
- Week 6: about half of swelling gone; strenuous exercise only after this point (ASPS article).
- Up to a year or more: bones and cartilage stay delicate, so avoid contact sports and protect the nose (ASPS article).
Beards don’t need to come off, but the splint and tape need a clean, dry surface for the first week. Glasses shouldn’t rest on the bridge in the first weeks, according to UCSF Health (US). For more practical tips, see our aftercare checklist.
Frequently Asked Questions
FAQ
Answers on male nose job results, returning to the gym, breathing fixes and how to avoid an over-operated look.
What does a nose job before and after male usually show?
Typically a smaller or removed hump, a straighter nose and a tip that stays strong and not upturned. The change should look like the same man with a more balanced profile. Final results take about a year as tip swelling settles.
When can men go back to the gym after rhinoplasty?
Light exercise usually restarts after two to three weeks. ASPS advises avoiding strenuous exercise for at least six weeks, and contact sports for longer, because the nasal bones and cartilage remain delicate for a year or more.
Can rhinoplasty fix a nose broken in sport?
Often, yes. Old fractures can be corrected by repositioning the bones and straightening the septum, which may also improve breathing. ASPS notes that breathing-related surgery may be covered by insurance with an exam and prior authorization.
How do men avoid an over-operated nose?
Keep the bridge strong and the tip unrotated, and remove less rather than more. Ask your surgeon to show male results with a similar starting nose, and discuss whether a smaller change, such as only reducing a hump, would suit your face better.
Is male rhinoplasty common?
It’s one of the more common cosmetic operations in men. ASPS members performed 7,018 rhinoplasties on men in 2024, about 14% of all cosmetic rhinoplasties they reported that year.
